How often to water a peace lily
Spathiphyllum
About once a week, when the top inch of soil is dry.
Peace lilies like their soil moist but not soggy, and they tell you when they are thirsty: the whole plant droops. It usually stands back up within hours of a drink, but do not wait for the droop every time.
Peace lily schedule
Water
- Spring and summer
- About once a week
- Fall and winter
- About every 1 to 2 weeks
Feed
- Spring and summer
- Every 6 to 8 weeks, at half strength
- Fall and winter
- None
Check the soil first. Water only when it is as dry as this guide says.
How to tell it is time to water
Feel the top inch of soil. When it is dry, water thoroughly and let the excess drain away.
Signs of overwatering
- Yellow leaves, especially lower ones
- Brown, soft patches at the base
- Drooping even though the soil is wet
Signs of underwatering
- The whole plant wilting and drooping
- Brown, crispy leaf tips
- Flowers browning early
Light and pot
- Light
- Medium to bright indirect light. It survives in lower light but flowers less and uses less water.
- Pot and soil
- A pot with a drainage hole and a moisture-holding potting mix. Empty the saucer after watering.
- Pets
- Listed by the ASPCA as toxic to cats and dogs. Keep it out of reach.
This schedule is general guidance for a healthy indoor plant. Light, temperature, humidity, pot size and soil all change how fast it dries out, so check the soil before you water and adjust.
