How often to water succulents

Echeveria, Haworthia, jade and others

Every 2 to 3 weeks in spring and summer, only when the soil is completely dry.

Most indoor succulents do best with the soak and dry method: water deeply, then wait until the soil is completely dry before watering again. Small pots dry faster than big ones.

Succulents schedule

Water

Spring and summer
About every 2 to 3 weeks
Fall and winter
About once a month, or less

Feed

Spring and summer
Once or twice, diluted cactus feed
Fall and winter
None

Check the soil first. Water only when it is as dry as this guide says.

How to tell it is time to water

The soil should be dry all the way to the bottom of the pot. Firm leaves mean it can wait; slightly soft, wrinkled leaves mean it is ready.

Signs of overwatering

  • Soft, translucent or mushy leaves
  • Black or brown stems
  • Leaves dropping at the lightest touch

Signs of underwatering

  • Wrinkled, deflated leaves
  • Lower leaves drying up faster than usual (a few dry lower leaves are normal)

Light and pot

Light
As much bright light as you can give them. A south or west window suits most.
Pot and soil
A gritty cactus mix and a pot with a drainage hole. Never a pot without one.

This schedule is general guidance for a healthy indoor plant. Light, temperature, humidity, pot size and soil all change how fast it dries out, so check the soil before you water and adjust.

Keep watering and feeding on one schedule

Watercan reminds you when your succulents needs water and when it needs food, on the same calendar as the rest of your plants.
